Contemporary Martin mansion
This isn’t your typical birdhouse! I’ve wanted to build one of these for quite some time. I’ve always been inspired by architectural structures and cabins but just don’t have the space to scale up to a life sized model, so I decided to build something cool for the birds. When the pandemic hit, I realized it was the perfect time to bring my sketchbook ideas to life. Little did I know just how much science was involved in making my creation functional. I also didn't expect to be using my chainsaw just to cut these angles, but it made the project that much more fun. Why build another traditional monotone bird hotel when you can have the luxury condo of the skies? For my first birdhouse build, I’m truly happy with the outcome. This is a beautiful, functional, livable work of art. Enjoy!
The Purple Martin Mansion consists of 12 individual condo units and is 100% handmade. Each unit is made from 3/4” thick plywood to deflect heat in the summer months. Rooftops and base areas are sheeted in Aluminum flashing for maximum durability in all weather conditions. The entire structure is hand-painted using oil-based enamel high-gloss sign paint and utilizing 20 different colors. Each units door is custom-made and double thickness (1.5”) to deter predators and increase longevity. Doors are removable via four exterior screws, which reveal a 3.5” circular opening that allows for a hand to easily reach in and clean out the unit whenever necessary. Each door has a perch for Purple Martins or similar size birds to stand on before entering the 2” diameter doorway. Every surface of the structure is painted and every joint of the structure is caulked and sealed. The whole unit weighs approximately 75lbs and will need to be pole mounted upon purchase. Delivery and mounting are not included but negotiable upon or prior to purchase. Base shown in photos is for marketing purposes only. Dimensions 36"h x 44"w x 48"d.
