“In A New Light 2” - University of Northern Colorado
We were brought back to UNC in Greeley, CO for the second year in a row to help transform another wing of the 99 year-old Crabbe Hall. This wing of the hallway is directly across from our “In A New Light” mural from the previous year. Crabbe Hall is an Arts building which also houses a small gallery called The Oak Room. All Freshman Foundation students will pass through these hallways at some point in their first year at UNC and the director wanted that experience to be truly memorable for years to come. For “In A New Light 2” we decided to hand paint the entire mural and worked with a 6 color palette that we tinted 8 shades for each color. this gave us an ambitious color wheel pallet to work from. We incorporated patterns of gray, black and white into open spaces to hep the color pop as well. We even created a custom UNC-themed tile for one section of the piece. Both the elevator door and drinking fountain were painted to match and we used fabricated raised elements in some of the patterns to make it truly 3-dimensional. In the end, this mural is just as much an experiential installation as it is paint on the wall. Hopefully it will bring light to the students at UNC for many years to come.
